In January 2003, the toothbrush was selected as the number one invention Americans could not live without. We use toothbrushes every day, but do you ever consider the shape of your toothbrush? What if you were elderly, or a very young child, would your toothbrush still be sufficient? How would you improve a toothbrush to be more inclusive? Using the idea of the person using the object as the basis for the design, human centered design aims to create products and systems that are functional by focusing on the user needs and applying human factors / ergonomics.

In this workshop, you will explore approaches to human centered design to create a toothbrush to fit user needs. You will make your own prototype using machine tools, hand tools, and finishing techniques to bring your design to life.

Guided by the design process many artists and designers use to fabricate objects, this workshop teaches you how to develop a project made from sheet materials, shop safety, and machine tool operation. You will come away with a finished object to add to your portfolio along with an understanding of the design process for mass produced consumer goods.

In this course, you'll learn to...
  • Translate a 2D sketch into a 3D object
  • The ideation and research process for designing a 3D prototype
  • Safely use machine equipment such as a bandsaw, drill press and strip bender
