Through guided instruction, you will compose a self-portrait using a small mirror while learning to effectively use line, colour, composition, texture, light and shadow to create form and depth in your paintings. Class discussion includes examples from different artists and their work for you to use as a reference toward experimentation, encouraging you to develop your unique style of mark-making.

By the end of the workshop, you will leave with one fully resolved self-portrait on a small canvas panel and a handout with tips on successfully composing a self-portrait. This workshop encourages participants from all levels and experience to join.

In this class you will learn...
  • Technical skills in rendering faces proportionally and accurately.
  • How to break down complex objects into basic shapes, using light/shadow and positive/negative space
  • Colour mixing to better understand shadow, line and form.
  • How to use perspective, cropping and composition in your work.
  • To experiment and explore a variety of drawing and painting techniques while learning to celebrate identity and individuality.
